Life can become humdrum, ordinary, and too busy. Valentine’s Day allows the opportunity to re-light the spark that started the firestorm of romance but often dwindles to nothing more than a pilot light.
Let Valentine’s Day be an opportunity to re-ignite the passion that was there at the beginning.
Plan Ahead
Romance is not about how much money is spent, but about how much energy is spent. Think ahead about what a perfect Valentine’s Day would be, and plan for it. Let your imagination flow, and don’t be afraid to act a little wild at the same time. Do something different and daring – just slightly out of the comfort zone. Put some surprise into the day.
Begin at Dawn
At first light, let there be a first touch. Reach over and hold a hand, scratch a back, play with hair. A simple touch with a reassuring “I love you” takes such little effort, but can mean so much. Put toothpaste on the toothbrush; serve the first cup of coffee with a smile and flirting eyes. Talk about the romantic evening that will be worth waiting for.
Make it Last All Day
Have notes or cards to be read at different times of the day – on the front seat of the car, in a packed lunch with special treats, in a coat pocket. Make contact during the day with a short phone call – all pleasure, no business. All day long re-focus on romance to stay in the mood.
It’s for Couples, Not Children
It’s okay for parents to take some time to nurture their relationships. It’s more than okay – it’s essential. And it’s good for children to see that parents like to spend time together. Parents spend all year taking care of the children. Let this be an evening for a couple’s relationship. Obviously, if a babysitter can be arranged, that’s the best. But even if it means feeding the kids early and getting them off to bed, there’s still time for a special late dinner with soft music and candlelight. Make a small table in the bedroom and have dinner alone. It will be a miracle if the kids don’t interfere, but keep it light and have fun trying.
Make an Effort to Look Good
Looking good is important for self-esteem as well as attraction. Take an afternoon shower and freshen up. Get out of the clothes that are worn everyday and put on something a little special. It’s not a fashion show, it’s just showing that an effort is being made to look good and smell nice for a special occasion. Pretend that this is a first date and the excitement of a first date will suddenly reappear from those memory banks that have been covered with cobwebs.
Make this Valentine’s Day a new tradition for all of the Valentine’s Days of the future. With a little imagination each one could get better and better.
